Fractured Orders, Fluid Loyalties: Power Politics in the Post-Alignment Age

The President of BIPSS Major General A N M Muniruzzaman (Retd) was one of the panelists in the session titled “Fractured Orders, Fluid Loyalties: Power Politics in the Post-Alignment Age” at the Bay of Bengal Conversation 2025, organized by the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS). He highlighted the transformation of the global order marked by rivalries, rising middle powers, a stronger Global South, and growing non-traditional security threats In a separate session on climate security, he drew attention to the vulnerabilities of coastal nations and communities dependent on the Sundarbans. He urged stronger global action to protect these critical ecosystems, vital for the security and development of lower riparian countries.

In another session, Mr. Shafqat Munir, Senior Research Fellow of BIPSS discussed how small South Asian states navigate regional power imbalances, stressing the need for greater strategic autonomy and reassessing foreign policy choices, particularly in Bangladesh’s case. In a separate session on climate security, he highlighted climate change as a growing strategic threat in the Bay of Bengal, critiqued existing climate regimes, and emphasized the Bangladesh Army’s role in disaster response alongside the need for sustainable, coordinated action.
