Death by Algorithm: Autonomous Drones in the Russia-Ukraine War

BIPSS Research Intern Mubtasim Munir examines in this commentary how autonomous drones and artificial intelligence are transforming modern warfare through the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He traces the evolution of drone warfare from reconnaissance and remotely operated systems to increasingly autonomous aerial, ground and maritime platforms. He highlights how AI is compressing the traditional kill chain while reducing human exposure to battlefield risks, but also creating serious concerns over civilian casualties, automation bias, escalation and accountability. He argues that as lethal decisions are increasingly delegated to algorithms, meaningful human oversight and the application of International Humanitarian Law face growing challenges. He concludes by calling for stronger international regulation and human control before autonomous warfare becomes a normalized feature of future conflicts.
