Global Crisis, Local Consequences: Who Protects the Vulnerable?

In this commentary, BIPSS Research Assistant Jannatul Toba Jhumu examines how interconnected global crises—from climate change and conflict to economic shocks—are disproportionately affecting the world’s most vulnerable populations. She argues that despite existing protection frameworks, weakening multilateralism, limited state capacity, and declining political will are eroding effective responses. Toba highlights how climate injustice, displacement, and market volatility are deepening inequalities, particularly in the Global South. She warns that without stronger cooperation, fair financing, and accountable governance, the gap between promise and protection will continue to widen.
