Generative AI in Influence Operations: Changing the Frame
Generative AI is revolutionising influence operations by enabling rapid, realistic production of misleading content like deepfakes, posing ethical and regulatory challenges. Its ability to spread misinformation on a large scale threatens democratic debate and public trust, as evidenced by recent cases of digital interference in elections. Misuse by state and non-state actors to manipulate opinions and disrupt societies underscores the urgent need for oversight.
BIPSS Research Intern Alice Daversin has suggested in this commentary that to counter these risks, clear guidelines, stronger detection tools, and public education are essential. International cooperation among policymakers, industry, and researchers is crucial to ensure responsible AI use, balancing innovation with safeguarding democratic resilience and transparency.
