Three Decades of BIMSTEC: Advancing Regional Cooperation for Shared Prosperity
The Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) recently organised a seminar titled “Three Decades of BIMSTEC: Advancing Regional Cooperation for Shared Prosperity”. The seminar was organised in view of Bangladesh’s ongoing Chairmanship of BIMSTEC and aimed to promote informed policy dialogue on strengthening regional cooperation for shared prosperity.
H.E. Shama Obaed Islam, MP, Honourable State Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, attended the seminar as the Chief Guest, while H.E. Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey, Secretary General of BIMSTEC, joined as the Special Guest.
In his address as the Session Chair, President of BIPSS Major General A N M Muniruzzaman, ndc, psc (Retd), highlighted BIMSTEC’s growing strategic importance in promoting regional connectivity, economic integration, energy security, climate resilience, and sustainable development, while highlighting Bangladesh’s pivotal role as a bridge between South and Southeast Asia. He noted that BIMSTEC complements SAARC by providing a pragmatic platform to address shared regional challenges through stronger cooperation.
It may be mentioned that Major General A N M Muniruzzaman (Retd) previously served as the Director General of BIISS and was appointed as its Lifetime Honorary Adviser in 2014.
