The Evolving Dynamics of Rakhine State: Implications for Bangladesh

Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) recently hosted a thought-provoking policy circle on “The Evolving Dynamics of Rakhine State: Implications for Bangladesh” at The Westin, Dhaka. We were honored to host Major General Md Shahidul Haque psc (Retd), former Defence Attache to Myanmar; Mr. Altaf Parvez, writer and researcher; and Mr. Parvez Karim Abbasi, Assistant Professor, East West University, as our distinguished speakers.
 
In the opening remarks, Mr. Shafqat Munir, Senior Research Fellow, BIPSS, urged Bangladesh to look beyond the Rohingya issue and consider the broader impacts on national security, economy, and politics. Our honorable moderator Major General ANM Muniruzzaman ndc, psc, (Retd), President, BIPSS, emphasized the significant geo-economic and geopolitical implications of the evolving Rakhine state dynamics for Bangladesh. Respected guest Major General Md Shahidul Haque highlighted Myanmar’s peaceful western border with Bangladesh and the critical role Bangladesh can play in the Rakhine situation. Mr. Altaf Parvez discussed the anti-colonial liberation struggle of the Arakan Army, their growing air and maritime power, and the potential security concerns for Bangladesh. Mr. Parvez Karim Abbasi delved into China’s complex relationship with Myanmar, the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC), and the strategic importance of the Kyaukphyu port.
 
Later the lively interactive session covered discussions about what Bangladesh’s next steps should be beyond the Rohingya crisis, addressing concerns about Arakan Army’s intentions, regional security implications, and the broader political dynamics in Myanmar.
