From Ballots to Balance: Resetting Bangladesh’s Foreign Policy After the Election

BIPSS Research Associate Mohosina Mostofa Mity examines how Bangladesh’s current government can navigate a rapidly shifting global order through a pragmatic, “Bangladesh First” foreign policy. In a world shaped by regional conflicts, great power competition, and economic uncertainty, she argues that Dhaka must pursue gradual normalization with India, maintain a development-focused yet strategically cautious partnership with China, and deepen economic engagement with the United States without entering bloc politics. A balanced and interest-driven approach toward Pakistan, grounded in historical awareness but focused on economic cooperation, is also essential. At the same time, Bangladesh should diversify beyond major powers by strengthening ties with the European Union, ASEAN, and other global partners to enhance diplomatic flexibility and reduce overdependence. Ultimately, the commentary highlights that economic diversification, strategic neutrality, governance reforms, and calibrated diplomacy will be key to protecting national interests and securing Bangladesh’s long-term stability in an increasingly complex international system.
