Security Sector Reform (SSR): Challenges, Opportunities, and Pathways Forward
BIPSS and DCAF (Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance) jointly organized a conference titled “Security Sector Reform (SSR): Challenges, Opportunities, and Pathways Forward” recently, which offered a comprehensive platform to examine key dimensions of security sector governance.
The sessions focused on the state of police reform, democratic control, oversight & accountability, media–security sector relations, and the critical role of gender and human rights. Bringing together representatives from different forces, policymakers, practitioners, academics, and civil society representatives, the discussions generated rich, forward-looking exchanges on pressing challenges, emerging opportunities, and practical pathways to strengthen transparency, accountability, and public trust. The program reaffirmed the importance of inclusive, rights-based, and people-centred approaches in shaping the future of security sector reform and governance.
