Water Security in Bangladesh: Challenges & Way Forward

The Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) organized the 4th Small Group Socialization on “Water Security in Bangladesh: Challenges & Way Forward” on 14th September 2025 at the Renaissance Hotel, Dhaka, as part of its EU-funded project on climate change and security. The session brought together academics, climate experts, security professionals, and EU representatives for a focused discussion on Bangladesh’s water-related challenges—from salinity intrusion, erosion, and urban flooding to groundwater depletion, arsenic contamination, and transboundary water tensions. Participants emphasized that water insecurity is not just an environmental concern but a critical national security issue, affecting health, livelihoods, and social stability. The dialogue underscored the need for inovative policies, nature-based and adaptive solutions, stronger transboundary water diplomacy, and community-led initiatives to ensure long-term resilience for Bangladesh.
