Will Myanmar Implode? Implications for Bangladesh and the Region

Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) recently organized an In-House Roundtable on the topic ‘Will Myanmar Implode? Implications for Bangladesh and the Region’ at the BIPSS Office, Dhaka. The moderator of the roundtable was Major General ANM Muniruzzaman, ndc, psc, (retd). The keynote presentation was given by Mr Thomas Kean, Senior Consultant, Myanmar & Bangladesh, International Crisis Group. The selected attendees of the roundtable included former foreign advisors, former ambassadors, representatives from embassies and international organizations and journalists.

Mr Thomas Kean provided an insight into the political situation in Myanmar. He believes that Myanmar currently is going through a pivotal moment. The current conflict in Myanmar has severe geopolitical implications. Although, China is the most influential actor in Myanmar, it also has some limitations. The conflict will also have an impact on Bangladesh. In terms of the future of the Myanmar military junta, Mr Kean believes that even though the junta is under severe strain, it is unlikely to collapse.
