The Changing Contours of Terrorism – A Threat Assessment

BIPSS, in partnership with DhakaTribune, recently hosted a roundtable on “The Changing Contours of Terrorism – A Threat Assessment” at The Westin Dhaka. The event was moderated by Major General ANM Muniruzzaman (retd), President, BIPSS and Mr. Zafar Sobhan, Editor of The Dhaka Tribune.

The Roundtable had an expert panel comprising of Mr. Shafqat Munir, Senior Research Fellow at BIPSS and Head of Bangladesh Centre for Terrorism Research (BCTR), and Dr. ASM Ali Ashraf, Professor, Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka, The session was attended by senior members of the diplomatic community, government officials, defence personnel, academics, editors, journalists, scholars and students from different universities.

The discussion centred on how terrorism as a phenomenon and as a threat has evolved over the years, with the inclusion of a myriad of newer factors like technology and gender. The panelists identified the growing extent and the subsequent danger posed by the problem and the need for comprehensive strategies to counter it.
