Influence Operations: An Emerging Threat
Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) organized a policy circle on “Influence Operations: An Emerging Threat” at The Westin Dhaka. Ms. Shameem Ara Sheuli, Country Representative- Bangladesh, Internews; Mr. Tanvir Habib, Lecturer, Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka and Ms. Marjuka Binte Afzal, Lecturer, Department of Peace, Conflict and Human Rights, Bangladesh University of Professionals were the distinguished speakers who shared their knowledge and perspectives regarding the discussion topic.
Mr. Shafqat Munir, Senior Research Fellow at BIPSS highlighted the growing threat of influence operations undermining democracy globally, noting their use in spreading disinformation and dividing societies. The moderator of the event, Major General ANM Muniruzzaman, ndc, psc, (Retd), President, BIPSS, emphasized on the critical role of information in our lives and the complexities introduced by AI in influence operations. Ms. Shamim Ara Sheuli discussed the evolution of influence operations from traditional media to new technologies, citing historical examples like the Gulf War. Mr. Tanvir Habib outlined the features and types of influence operations, while Ms. Marjuka Binte Afzal stressed the importance of understanding their goals and the need for robust fact-checking mechanisms. The interactive session covered issues like positive uses of influence operations, non-state actors’ roles, coping strategies, and the impacts of geopolitical rivalries on influence operations. Journalists, academicians, students, representatives from different organizations and ambassadors have attended the event.
