Acceleration Without Control: When Military Technology Outpaces Strategy

We often assume that superior military technology guarantees security. But what happens when that technology moves faster than human judgment? In my latest commentary, “Acceleration Without Control,” I’ve focused on how the sheer velocity of modern warfare is destabilizing global security. Hypersonic missiles are compressing warning times, while artificial intelligence filters and prioritizes targets in mere seconds. The common thread across this new battlespace is the loss of time—the critical cushion leaders have historically relied on to assess signals, clarify intent, and manage escalation. While emerging military systems accelerate at the speed of code, strategy, doctrine, and diplomacy still operate at a fundamentally slower, institutional pace.

  The true danger in this mismatch is not the technological innovation itself, but the fragility of the institutions meant to govern it. As decision-making windows shrink, we risk stumbling into algorithmic “flash wars” that escalate faster than political leaders can process the events.
