Misinformation in India about Communal Violence in Bangladesh: Its Implications

The 2024 events in Bangladesh, following the revolutionary movement, serve as a stark reminder of how misinformation can distort reality and escalate communal violence. The situation in Bangladesh was sensationalized and manipulated, particularly through digital channels in India, leading to heightened tensions and strained diplomatic relations between the two countries. Fake news, manipulated videos, and false narratives were used to portray an exaggerated and distorted picture of the violence, fueling animosity and fear among communities. The consequences of such misinformation are far-reaching, as it not only endangers social harmony but also becomes a tool for political actors to further their agendas. The misinformation surrounding the Bangladesh revolution in 2024 underscores the need for robust measures to combat the spread of false information, including rigorous fact-checking, responsible journalism, and cross-border cooperation between governments, civil society and tech platforms.
