Empowering Communities in Risk Management: Evaluating Localized Approaches to Disaster Preparedness in South Asia
BIPSS Research Intern Alice Daversin examined in this commentary the importance of community empowerment in disaster preparedness across South Asia, emphasizing the role of local engagement, capacity-building, and inclusive decision-making in enhancing resilience. It highlights barriers such as cultural norms, economic constraints, and lack of political support that hinder effective participation. Successful community-driven initiatives in Bangladesh and Nepal, including village disaster committees, early warning systems, and women’s empowerment programs, demonstrate the effectiveness of localized approaches. The study underscores the significance of integrating traditional knowledge with modern technologies, such as mobile apps and social media, to improve disaster response. It concludes with recommendations for fostering inclusivity, resource mobilization, and sustainable community-led strategies to strengthen disaster risk management.
