Bangladesh 2.0: Geopolitical and Geoeconomic Options

The Bangladesh Institute of Peace of Security Studies (BIPSS) recently hosted a roundtable discussion titled “Bangladesh 2.0: Geopolitical and Geoeconomic Options” at The Westin Dhaka, bringing together distinguished experts to explore the nation’s evolving strategic landscape, offering deep insights into its future challenges and opportunities. Major General ANM Muniruzzaman (Retd), President at BIPSS moderator of the session, inaugurated the session by reflecting on the end of the autocratic regime and the potential for Bangladesh to serve as a bridge between South Asia and Southeast Asia, emphasizing the importance of balanced relations with global powers.

One of our three expert panellists, Dr Marufa Akhter, chair & and Assistant Professor at the Department of Global Studies and Governance in IUB, highlighted the challenges of maintaining bilateral relations with India and Myanmar, advocating for a redefinition of these relationships to enhance democracy and transparency in governance. Mr. Shafqat Munir, Senior Research Fellow & Head of BCTR at BIPSS emphasized the need for a forward-looking approach, focusing on developing comprehensive strategies for Bangladesh’s geopolitical and geo-economics interests with nations across the globe. Mr. Parvez Karim Abbasi, Assistant Professor of East West University, addressed the historical economic challenges, including rising debt and the precarious state of the banking sector, urging immediate reforms to improve economic connectivity and trade agreements. The event fostered a vibrant dialogue among participants from various sectors, contributing valuable insights into Bangladesh’s future!
