BIPSS Roundtable Explores Bangladesh’s Geoeconomic Options

Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) recently hosted a high-level roundtable titled “Navigating Geoeconomic Challenges in a Complex Multipolar World: Options for Bangladesh,” bringing together diplomats, academics, economists, and policy experts to discuss the evolving global geo-economic landscape and its implications for Bangladesh. Moderated by Major General (Retd) A N M Muniruzzaman, President of BIPSS, the session focused on trade disruptions, shifting global alliances, and the urgent need for strategic economic reforms.

Dr. Fahmida Khatun, Executive Director of CPD, stressed the importance of shifting from aid dependence to a trade-driven growth model. She highlighted the need for stronger trade negotiation capacity and regional engagement ahead of Bangladesh’s LDC graduation.

Dr. Anwara Begum, Research Director at BIDS, emphasized attracting FDI, harnessing the potential of the Blue Economy, and addressing infrastructure gaps. She also called for inclusive policies to tackle climate-induced migration and rising financial constraints.

Mr. Parvez Karim Abbasi, Assistant Professor at East West University, raised concerns over regulatory vulnerabilities and weak digital governance. He urged strategic management of natural resources and political stability to boost investor confidence.

The session concluded with calls for research-backed policy, institutional reforms, and forward-looking diplomacy to strengthen Bangladesh’s resilience in an increasingly competitive global order.
