The Monsoon Revolution – An Agenda for a New Bangladesh
BIPSS recently organized a Policy Café titled “The Monsoon Revolution – An Agenda for a New Bangladesh” at The Westin Dhaka. Panelists discussed pressing issues like human rights violations, loss of freedom of speech, high inflation, and unemployment, emphasizing the interim government’s need for reforms.
Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar,head of the Electoral System Reform Commission, highlighted student protests against discrimination and stressed the opportunity for change after the former Prime Minister’s resignation. Barrister Manzoor Hasan, OBE, Executive Director of the Centre for Peace and Justice at BRAC University,called for constitutional reforms to restore freedoms and reflect the people’s will. Mr. Parvez Karim Abbasi, Assistant Professor of East West University, addressed economic challenges, including high inflation and youth unemployment, but remained hopeful for a fresh start.
Shafqat Munir, a senior research fellow at BIPSS and the head of BCTR, moderated the discussion. He acknowledged the difficulties but emphasized that there is now a free environment to discuss issues openly, which is an essential step towards addressing and solving these problems.The event included a lively discussion with participants from various sectors, including students, academics, diplomats, and members of civil society.
